Lookin’ for Proxiweb

I see today that evolt.org’s Browser Archive is looking for an archive of ProxiWeb, a Palm web browser.

The heck of it is, Back N Tha D-a-i-y-e, I used to be a ProxiWeb junkie. There weren’t a lot of options for the Palm platform at that point, especially if you were paying $33.99 a month for wireless internet service from OmniSky. [Thank Brian Nerdtech for getting me hooked on that — whashappenin’, playah?]

Proxiweb [a commercial spin-off from UCBerkeley] connected through a proxy [hence the name] that would downsample the web content for a tiny Palm-size screen — make the graphics tiny and B/W, stuff like that — and then push it to your Palm. It worked great, and then the company was acquired by Pumatech, and then Pumatech became Intellisync and they shut down their public proxy server and started selling to businesses only.

I searched my hard drive for any ProxiWeb stuff, usually I have a hard time throwing things away, but no trace. I think I switched to EudoraWeb when Proxiweb stopped working. Then when Earthlink bought OmniSky they included Handspring Blazer in their package. Then I put my bag through oneathem airport security checkpoint scanners on my honeymoon and the modem never quite worked right after that so I cancelled it. Sure, I have net access on my new phone right now, but it’s not the same.

OVW vs. The World

A warning shot off the bow of pretenders from the WWE’s developmental promotion:

If you want to find out what’s the latest news with Ohio Valley Wrestling and our OVW Superstars, you could go to www.mommygotmeacomputerforchristmassoInowrunawrestlingnewsboard.net…

Hey, hold on there a second. I love that site.

Please avoid Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for the Xbox.

I beg you. If you can, play it on the PS2 — if you can’t, don’t play it at all. Ordinarily I’m all about the Xbox versions, but the controls in the Xbox version are critically flawed and it should never have made it out the door. [Victor tells me that he has heard of similar problems with the Gamecube version, but I can neither confirm nor deny.] This isn’t just a little frustrating, this is ATARI 2600 E.T. BAD.
